All those amazing things to do in Cologne

Cologne is not a city for the fainthearted. It is easily considered one of the most liberal cities in Germany. But at the same time, Cologne is one of the oldest cities Germany has. Just like the Rhine weaves through the streets of Cologne, so does a strong sense of tradition and innovation. Cologne is also an extremely open minded city, and has one of the highest queer populations in Germany at around ten percent. This western city also has quite a few important facts and monuments to get to know on your list of things to do in Cologne. Boasting a quite famous chocolate museum, Cologne also has a rich history in the other finer things in life, including, of course Eau de Cologne. So whether you’re looking for the night out of a lifetime, or a cozy historically-minded trip, there are things to do in Cologne for everyone, especially when you are exploring them with Eat the World.

Things to do in Cologne: History

Kölnisch Wasser, or cologne/perfume in English is by far the most famous product of Cologne’s history. Developed in 1709 by Giovanni Maria Farina in Cologne, the smelly stuff was a sensation at the time. Upon his invention, he wrote to his brother: “I have found a fragrance that reminds me of an Italian spring morning, of mountain daffodils and orange blossoms after the rain.” The wealthy populations of Europe seemed to agree, because Farina received orders from royals and aristocrats everywhere. At the time of its invention, a single bottle of Eau de Cologne could cost up to the equivalent of half a year’s salary for an average worker. This success prompted many copies, and by the end of the eighteenth century there were countless colognes available, however, the original Eau de Cologne, and specifically ‘4711’ bottle remained renowned. The scent is even still available now, and featured in an entire brand of perfumed products. One of the great things to do in Cologne, if this olfactory tale is interesting to you, is to make a visit to the Farina Fragrance Museum located in the original building that the first bottle of 4711 was developed in.

Things to do in Cologne: Food
