Walking Tour Mainz-Old Town: A look through the ages
Embark on a journey through time and immerse yourself in the history of an old Roman city on the Rhine. The tour takes you along the ancient city walls of the “Oberstadt,” where you will learn more about the local monuments and masonry as you catch a glimpse of the city gates of an old fortress wall in a quiet neighborhood with a new residential complex connected to a seven-story wine cellar: a true masterpiece of modern architecture.

Wander through the picturesque Gaustraße to St. Stephen's Church, the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine district, and marvel at the famous stained-glass windows designed by Marc Chagall. This spot also marks the location where the steepest tram in Germany goes. The tour will then guide you down through the enchanting alleyways of the old section of town as you enter the Cherry Garden, the heart of the historic Old Town district.

Your tour guide will regale you with exciting stories and amusing anecdotes about the lives of famous Mainz residents and the “town clerks” as you learn more about the former cooling cellar of the city which now brews beer in its vaults. The tour is rounded off with tasty culinary samples just waiting to be devoured by you.

Delicious food samples from the following locales:

  • an exotic gourmet food store
  • a small soup bar
  • an Indian street food store
  • a Spanish restaurant
  • a German restaurant
  • a special foccaceria
  • a chocolate shop

For most, the food samples are enough to constitute a full lunch. Please inform us of any special dietary requirements (vegetarian, diabetic etc). We will try to tailor our tour accordingly.
Please Note: The tour is not suitable for vegans, people with lactose or gluten intolerance, or those with nut allergies.
