Call forwarding, laptops with wireless internet, e-mails on cell phones and smartphones .... Constant availability is now no longer a problem. On the contrary: It's almost hard to escape the on-line status. Employers increasingly expect that staff can be reached in an emergency while on holiday. Independent resolved only with a heavy heart of the online connection, because it could end up always something important in e-mail inbox. In the current summer and vacation time, the question arises: Should we really be constantly available, or let things happen just once?
The other day I was with friends a few days on vacation at the Baltic Sea and unfortunately or fortunately had an Internet connection is not possible, because there (in the lowest nature reserve) was no reception. When I then again after three days had a chance to check my e-mails, waiting for me in my mailbox surprises. Among other things, it was
- Server problems and difficulties that the accessibility of our website (revenue declines of approximately 20%),
- Missed press inquiries
- neglected in a meeting with a potential partner
What happens when you read that? It gets into trouble and circulated around specific problems and opportunities constantly in mind. Result: The vacation is no vacation more.
Of course, it is technically directing nowadays usually not a problem, his office number on your mobile or more times just to check email. This is likely to last only ten minutes. But these ten minutes can lead to unpleasant consequences. The holiday season is concentrated from brooding and searching for solutions. That is one of the worst states: One is on vacation, but has not yet productive recovery work. This neither-nor-state should give way to the either-or condition: Either you're on holiday or to work, otherwise it is useless waste of time.
I'm starting to realize that one of the "noise" and should be shut down once and that the world does not end when you are offline times.
